Yugoslavia Country and Travel Guide

The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes was formed in 1918 and its name was changed to "Yugoslavia" in 1929. It was occupied by Germany in 1941 and a resistance group headed up by Marshal Tito expelled the Germans and assumed control of the country in 1945. In the early 1900's Yugoslavia began to unravel along ethnic lines.

Slovenia, Croatia and the Macedonia declared their independence in 1991 and Bosnia and Herzegovina did the same in 1992. The remaining repoublics of Serbia and Montenegro declared a new "Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. In February of 2003 the relationship between the two republics was officially made looser and an agreement was reached to hold a referendum in each of those republics in 2006 on full independence.
